Yes, I used to own a donkey. Sandy.

He had all the endearing attributes of his kin: stubborn, schizophrenic, I would like to say slothful, but then I was riding on his back. His outlook on life might have been down to me, perched precariously on a lounge cushion on his back. Sadly, I don’t have a single fond memory of Sandy. He unceremoniously dumped me on my rather lean behind one afternoon after a duiker (diminutive antelope) spooked him. Deep in the bush kilometres from home (no embellishments here, I grew up in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert) I had to make my way home by foot, to find Sandy standing obstinately (donkeys have perfected this trait) outside our front gate. He was waiting to be fed of course.

But enough about donkeys…
